leftunspoken's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- one minute your there and the next... Daddy got pinned by a Brahman cow this weekend. They don't normally do sale barns on the weekend, but it's weaning time. So all weekend they were separating the calves from their mamas and getting the calves ready for sale. The cows will be sent back. Some to stay and some to fatten up a little more before sale. (Cattle are mostly sold in spring and fall when they are at their fattest.) By the mercy of God, she managed to pin him with one horn on one side and one horn on the other side of him. So basically she was just head-butting him into the metal fence. I say just. Brahman cows weigh a couple of pounds shy of a ton. They stand more than five feet tall. She broke a couple of his ribs and dislocated his hip and he's black and blue, but he's not peeing blood so I guess there's no internal bleeding. I say guess, because he refused to go to the hospital. He's stubborn as a mule and mean as a rattlesnake. I'm thanking God though, because if she'd caught him with a horn he'd more than likely be dead. Did I mention Daddy is about to be 74. And he's still a full-time working cowboy. And I guess I'm grateful that he's doing what he loves, but what happened this weekend has my heart still stuck in my throat. Amazing how easily he could be gone...bodies being such fragile little things. 10:47 a.m. - October 06, 2003 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
